Liyan: Connecting the dots between art and wellbeing

Updated: Apr 22

From a young age, Simone was given many opportunities to paint, and as she grew, she found ways to share her artwork with the world. Through her career and connections, her art has been exhibited in unique and unexpected places—including on a racing car!

Driven by her passion for health and fitness, Simone launched Liyan, a brand dedicated to promoting movement and wellbeing. While health is important for everyone, she recognises the need to improve outcomes for First Nations communities and wants to use her brand to create meaningful change.

Simone has always loved the outdoors and dreamed of sharing her art more widely. Her sand-free beach towels were most recently featured at the AFL Indigenous Round and regularly available at markets like Summer X Salt. They are proof that passion and determination can turn dreams into reality. Building on this theme of movement and connection to nature, she has recently introduced yoga mats to her collection.

"Exercise and being in nature have always grounded me” Simone shares. "Moving from Broome to Perth, I’ve missed the small community and deep connection to nature. The challenges in life shape who we are, and each of my pieces carries a story. Through Liyan, I want to empower others."

Beyond creating her own work, Simone is committed to uplifting other artists. “I’d love to see other Aboriginal artists get their designs out there, especially helping young artists to get more exposure, share their stories, and spread messages of positivity and collaboration.”

One of the featured artworks, by Erika Fernandez, beautifully represents the healing power of nature. She shows how simply being outside can restore the mind, body, and spirit. Whether it’s going for a walk, heading to the beach or river, camping, or spending time out bush, the fresh air, the warmth of the sun, and the feeling of the land beneath your feet all contribute to healing. This message aligns perfectly with Liyan’s purpose.

This year, Simone is focusing on nurturing meaningful partnerships. “I’m really excited to be creating a design in collaboration with MIM,” she shares. The Marine Industry Mentoring (MIM) network is an organisation dedicated to connecting people and conserving oceans by supporting aspiring and early to mid-career scientists.

Through this collaboration, Simone uses her art to inspire connection, raise awareness, and deepen appreciation for nature. Liyan is a creative venture to inspire others to get their bodies moving. It’s also about connection, empowerment, and making a meaningful impact.
